Chief Data Scientist Anthony Scriffignano talks with Distinguished Data Architect Elizabeth Barrette about the important role Master Data plays in the realm of machine learning and AI.
Elizabeth starts the conversation by asking, "What is Master data and how does it relate to machine learning and AI?"
Anthony answers with the idea that Master Data is one type of data. Typically the definition of master data is the data that doesn't change with the transaction activity of an enterprise. Master Data consists of who your customers are, who your vendors are. If you sell them one more thing that doesn't change your Master Data. Master Data is critical for making decisions about who you are doing business with, who you are thinking about doing business with, where you think they are, what you think they do, and who you think they are connected who. Those sorts of decisions are incredibly important. Now you extrapolate that to machine learning. Can you learn from that type data? Well you can learn certain things from that type of data, but can you learn everything from that data? Absolutely not.
Even if you took all of your transactional data, all of our Master Data, all of our signals, and all of our transactional data, and you tried to machine learn your way into what's going to happen with Brexit, or what's going to happen after they land on Mars, you can imagine how the type of learning that is required would require more than just data from the past. So Master Data is super important but it's not the only component to business decisions making. It depends on the question that you are asking.
